Eritrea lies in the Horn of Africa, across the Red Sea from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. A long separatist struggle produced independence in 1991, but leaders continue to be preoccupied by relations with Ethiopia. Society remains militarized and power is centrally wielded by the founding liberation party. While often portrayed as an isolated and even reclusive state, efforts should be made toward normalization of relations with the United States and the international community.
