A Global South with Chinese characteristics
Spotlight event
The Atlantic Council’s Global China Hub is thrilled to host the launch of a new report, “A Global South with Chinese characteristics”, on Wednesday, June 12th, at 9:00 a.m. ET.
As part of Chinese ambition to compete with the existing liberal international order, China has been using political and economic tools to export its model of governance, particularly to the Global South. In this report, Nonresident Fellow Niva Yau analyzes Chinese governmental training programs in the Global South implemented by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce on topics such as trade, blockchain and information security technologies, Belt and Road Initiative, and governance practices to explore if the Chinese have been effective in exporting its model of authoritarian governance and the implications of increased Chinese engagement in the Global South.
The panel will discuss this report and investigate the current extent of Global South’s acceptance and adaptation of the Chinese authoritarianism and how the Global South can ensure access to holistic, objective, and transparent information about China’s intention and its domestic affairs.
