The Atlantic Council’s Transatlantic Security Initiative, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, and Our Secure Future: Women Make the Difference, hosted a hybrid public event, “Women, Peace, and Security in a shifting security landscape,” on Monday, March 4, 2024, from 10:30 – 11:30 am ET.

On the margins of International Women’s Day, the United States and its allies and partners around the world must confront an evolving security environment. As conflicts erupt from Europe to the Middle East and beyond, malign actors aim to upend the rules-based international order, target civilian populations, and exacerbate global insecurity. Women are consistently and disproportionately affected in these conflicts; however, women and gendered perspectives can provide the solutions to transform the security environment and enable lasting peace.

As we reflect on several critical milestones—including nearly 25 years of the United Nations resolution on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) as well as NATO’s 75th anniversary—this discussion considered how emergent geopolitical challenges centered on issues related to climate change, new technologies, and the global refugee crisis, should be addressed and prioritized through a gender lens to strengthen collective security and defense alliances.

This conversation took place in person and virtually and was broadcast on YouTube, X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook, and LinkedIn.

This event was part of the Transatlantic Security Initiative’s 2024 NATO Washington Summit Campaign. For more information and updates on future events and publications, follow @ACScowcroft.

Our Secure Future works to strengthen the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda to build a more peaceful world through ensuring women’s full participation in governance. Our Secure Future’s purpose is to ensure the effective incorporation of gender perspectives into peace and security decision-making at the international and national level because this leads to better security outcomes for everyone.

The Transatlantic Security Initiative, in the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, shapes and influences the debate on the greatest security challenges facing the North Atlantic Alliance and its key partners.
